PSJA ISD Sharing Basket Initiative Brings the Spirit of Giving to School Cafeterias
PHARR – In the true spirit of the Season of Giving, the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District (PSJA ISD) Child Nutrition Program (CNP) has introduced the Sharing Basket initiative, a heartwarming effort that fosters kindness, reduces food waste, and strengthens the sense of community across its schools.
Launched in cafeterias district-wide, the Sharing Basket invites students to place unopened, uneaten, or prepackaged food items they don’t want into a designated basket instead of throwing them away. These items are then available for other students who may want an additional snack or treat during their meal period.
“This initiative reminds us that sharing truly is caring,” said Juan Contreras, PSJA Child Nutrition Administrator. “The Sharing Basket not only helps reduce waste but also teaches our students the value of generosity and supporting one another.”
The Sharing Basket program is part of PSJA ISD’s continued efforts to provide innovative solutions that meet the needs of all students. By connecting sustainability and nutrition, the district emphasizes its commitment to caring for both its students and the environment.
As the holiday season approaches, this initiative is a timely reminder of the importance of giving and fostering a supportive community. The Sharing Basket serves as a simple yet impactful way to highlight the district’s dedication to creating opportunities for all—whether it’s through education, nutritious meals, or promoting acts of kindness.
