PSJA ISD hosts inaugural 9/11 Patriot Day Remembrance Ceremony to honor local heroes and preserve legacy

PHARR, TX – In a moving ceremony held at the Pharr Events Center, the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District (PSJA ISD) brought together hundreds of students, staff, city leaders, and first responders to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of September 11, 2001. The event aimed to educate students on the significance of September 11th while honoring local heroes who displayed extraordinary courage on that day.

The ceremony featured heartfelt remarks from the PSJA Superintendent of School Dr. Alejandro Elias, who spoke about the importance of remembering 9/11 and educating the next generation about the values of courage, unity, and resilience that emerged that historic day.

“This is something that the students need to make sure that they don't forget. It's an educational moment for all students,” said Dr. Elias during his remarks. “By learning from history, we hope to instill in them the values of resilience, compassion, and of deep understanding of the impact this event had on our nation and the world.”

Dr. Elias’ remarks set the tone for a day of reflection and learning, as 11th grade students from across the cities of Pharr, San Juan, and Alamo came together to participate in this significant event.

A highlight of the ceremony was a powerful address by Sgt. Major Clifford Lovejoy, retired U.S. Army veteran and 9/11 survivor. He shared his personal story and recollections of that fateful day speaking directly to all attendees, Sgt. Major Lovejoy provided a first-hand account of the courage, strength, and enduring spirit that defined that day.

Additionally, in a special moment of honor, student representatives from the PSJA Pathways Toward Independence Program and each PSJA ISD high school presented handmade wreaths to city officials in tribute to the fallen heroes of 9/11 as well as remembrance poem readings by PSJA Student Council representatives.

For PSJA Memorial Student Council President Jose Ochoa reciting a poem at the event was his way of honoring the many lives lost on 9/11 and showing appreciation for the bravery of our first responders.

“As a student, I feel it is important for us to understand the significance of that day, not just through textbooks but through personal reflection and remembrance,” said Ochoa. “By sharing these words, I hope to honor their courage and remind everyone that we can find strength and unity in each other.”

The PSJA Family extends its thanks to all participants, including PSJA Alumni Rick Diaz who graciously served as Master of Ceremonies. Through the event, PSJA ISD exemplified the power of community and education in keeping the memory of 9/11 alive, ensuring that the lessons learned from that day will continue to inspire future generations.
